Calvary Baptist Library
News Flash - Calvary Baptist is in the process of developing an online card catalog that all members can use to find the books that they would like to read. Each book will have its own entry with a picture of the book, locator number, author, synopsis, and additional info. Members can also enter comments about the book after reading it so that other readers can read your review and opinion.
I would like the church to consider using our library as an outreach tool by establishing a Free Little Library on the edge of the parking lot by the highway so that passersby can take a free book to read. We can stock the library with Bibles, duplicate books, culled books, tracts and pamphlets. The idea is to show the community that we are here to help and serve them, to encourage reading in the community, to make our presence and purpose known, and, most importantly, to bring people to Jesus. Our target audience would not only be citizens of Trinity but also truckers and travelers along the highway who might need the help of a good book.
Here are a few facts about reading that you might want to consider:
- Psalm 119:11 I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You. Reading enhances memory and cognition. In a study involving MRI brain scans of people reading, the scans showed increased activity in many areas of the brain and the effect lasted for several days afterwards. Reading rewires your brain and helps to reduce age related memory problems. Studies have shown repeatedly that people who read print books score higher on comprehension tests and remember more of what they read than people who read the same material in digital form.
- Reading helps develop empathy. Reading increases your ability to connect with people in the world. Readers also have better social skills and a better understanding of the struggles people face and how to help them. Doesn't the Bioble present people in a variety of challenging situations so that we can learn to understand others and learn to cope with the struggles of life with God's help?
3. Reading has been proven to promote rest and healthy sleep. Psalm 119:28 My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to Your Word.
4. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. How can anyone properly know and use God's Word unless they read and study it?
